Habitat and Region Explorer
Pick a habitat, a region and a season to see which birds in our library are associated with that combination.
Presence varies. Bird presence and timing change with location, weather, habitat and migration. Treat this page as a starting point, then check recent local sightings (for example on eBird) before you go.
How to read the explorer
Each habitat and region combination lists birds from our library that are associated with it. “Associated with” means the bird is commonly found there, not that it is guaranteed. A woodland bird may feed in a yard in winter, and a coastal bird may follow rivers inland.
- Habitat describes the type of place: forest, wetland, grassland, coast, city or park, backyard or desert scrub.
- Region uses six broad regions. Large regions hold many local differences, such as mountains versus plains.
- Season is matched to the chosen region. If you leave the region open, a bird appears if it can be seen in that season somewhere in its range.
After you find a bird, open its page for the full range, seasonal table and observation tips. For planning a trip, read the regional guides and the habitat guides, and check recent sightings for the exact place you are going. Please watch from a distance. See How to Observe Birds Responsibly.
