About Nosemo

Nosemo is an independent birdwatching library for people in the United States. It is built as a reference you can come back to, not a feed of posts.

What you will find here

Each species has its own page with identification features, size, habitat, geographic range, seasonal presence, diet, behavior, voice, look-alike species, observation tips and conservation status. Around those pages sit guides for beginners, habitat and regional guides, and a few tools: the Bird Finder, the habitat and region explorer, a species comparison and a seasonal calendar.

Who it is for

New birders who want to name the bird at the feeder. Returning birders who want a quick look-alike check. Anyone who wants to watch wildlife without bothering it.

How we work

We start from published ornithology: the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, the IUCN Red List and US wildlife agencies. We write in our own words, say clearly when something varies by region or season, and leave a fact out when we cannot confirm it. The full method is on the sources and identification criteria page and in our editorial policy.

Birds first

Good birding is quiet and respectful. Our guides push distance, patience and care around nests, and they say plainly what not to do. Start with How to Observe Birds Responsibly.

What we are not

Nosemo is not affiliated with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, the IUCN or any government agency. We cite them as sources. We are not a rescue service: if you find an injured bird, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or your state wildlife agency.
